Welcome to the 17th PCA Forum in Tangier - Morocco May 7-12, 2024
The Person-Centered Approach (PCA), also known as client-centered therapy, is a therapeutic approach developed by American psychologist Carl Rogers in the 1940s. It focuses on the importance of building a relationship of trust and collaboration between the psychotherapist and the client, and aims to promote personal growth and the development of the individual.
The Person Centred Approach is based on an optimistic view of the human being. It considers that each individual has within him/herself the necessary resources to understand and develop itself and to find solutions to his or her problems. The role of the psychotherapist is to provide a warm, empathetic and non-judgemental environment, which encourages the client to express itself freely and authentically.
In historical terms, Carl Rogers developed this approach in reaction to the psychoanalytical and behaviourist approaches dominant in his time. He questioned the traditional position of the psychotherapist as an expert who would impose his advice and interpretations on the client. Instead, Rogers believed that the psychotherapist should adopt an attitude of active listening, understanding and unconditional acceptance towards the client.
The methods used in the Person-Centred Approach focus on three fundamental concepts. The first is empathic understanding, which involves understanding and sharing the client's feelings and experiences. The psychotherapist listens attentively and tries to put him/herself in the place of his/her client, in order to promote a climate of understanding and mutual respect.
The second concept is congruence, which refers to the psychotherapist's authenticity and genuineness in his or her relationship with the client. The psychotherapist expresses his or her feelings in an appropriate way, thereby facilitating a sincere and open relationship.
The third concept is unconditional positive regard. This means that the psychotherapist accepts and values the client without judgement, whatever their actions or feelings. This allows the client to feel safe to explore their deepest thoughts and emotions, without fear of being criticised or rejected.
During person-centred psychotherapy sessions, the psychotherapist mainly uses clarification, reflection and reformulation techniques. They encourage clients to explore their own feelings, values and motivations, helping them to develop a better understanding of themselves. The psychotherapist avoids giving advice or dictating solutions, believing in the client's resources and ability to find their own answers.
The Person-Centred Approach is applied in many fields, including individual psychotherapy, group therapy, counselling, change management in companies, and education and training. It focuses on the individual's potential for growth and development.
Carl Rogers, born in 1902 in Oak Park, Illinois, was an American psychologist renowned for his major contributions to psychotherapy. He is considered the founder of the Person-Centered Approach (PCA), a revolutionary approach that has profoundly influenced the field of psychotherapy.
Rogers earned his doctorate in clinical psychology at Columbia University in 1931 and then began working as a teacher and researcher. During his research, he challenged traditional approaches of his times, such as psychoanalysis, emphasizing the importance of the therapeutic relationship and the subjective experience of the client. Traditional approaches being directive, Carl Rogers instead emphasized on the autonomy and personal growth of the client. He paved the way for a new way of approaching psychotherapy.
His view of therapy was centered on the client himself, hence the name Person-Centered Approach. Rogers believes that each individual has the resources within themselves to understand themselves and find solutions to their problems. He viewed the psychotherapist as a facilitator, providing a supportive and understanding environment for the client to explore and develop their potential.
Rogers highlighted three key concepts in his approach. First, empathic understanding, which involves understanding and sharing the client's feelings. Then, congruence, which refers to the authenticity and genuineness of the psychotherapist in his relationship with the client. Finally, unconditional positive regard, which means that the therapist accepts and values ??the client without judgment.
Rogers has also played a major role in promoting the person-centered approach in other areas, such as education, counseling and training. He has written many influential works, including "On becoming a Person" and "Counseling and Psychotherapy", which have helped to spread his ideas and inspire many practitioners.
Throughout his career, Carl Rogers has received many honors and distinctions for his contributions to psychology and psychotherapy. He died in 1987, leaving a lasting legacy in the field of person-centered psychotherapy and a considerable influence on the practice of modern psychotherapy.
